Latest Tech Updates You Shouldn’t Miss

Meta’s smart glasses & AR/AI advances

At Meta Connect 2025, Meta revealed new hardware and software in augmented reality and wearable tech. Highlights include: the Ray-Ban Meta Display glasses with a waveguide display, and the new “Meta Neural Band” wristband that senses gestures using EMG signals. Also introduced: Horizon Engine and Horizon Studio tools for building AI/3D worlds & avatars.

Windows 11 gets more intelligent & usable

Microsoft’s latest Insider builds in September added several features: fluid dictation via on-device small language models, improved secondary camera support for Studio Effects, Copilot integration in File Explorer, new privacy tools like showing AI request logs from third-party apps, and streamlined settings (e.g. a new “Advanced” page).

Low-cost metal 3D-printing from IIT Indore

Researchers in India developed Micro-Plasma Metal Additive Manufacturing (MP-MAM) — a cheaper, more energy-efficient, faster way to 3D-print metal parts (titanium, superalloys). Could have big impact in aerospace, medical implants, industrial tooling. Also less harmful emissions.

Biometric UPI payments without traditional devices

Startup Proxgy launched ThumbPay, a device that links Aadhaar biometric authentication (thumbprint) with UPI payments. This allows transactions without needing a phone, card, or physical wallet. A step toward more inclusive finance, especially for those without advanced tech access.

Quantum tech gets more practical

Scientists from Israel and Germany made progress in harvesting light from defects (“nitrogen-vacancy centres”) in diamonds. They embedded nanodiamonds in specially engineered nanoantennas to direct up to ~80% of emitted photons in a specific direction at room temperature. This improves efficiency for quantum sensors, communication, and other quantum devices.

Apple Intelligence

Apple has been bidding on its time to adopt AI. This year, the company introduced Apple Intelligence, which has full on-device capabilities.

While Apple’s AI offerings remain modest, including improved proofreading, summarization, enhanced Siri suggestions, and image generation, one standout feature has captured attention: the iPad now boasts an official calculator app, and it’s surprisingly impressive.

Facebook's Fresh Features: What's New in Your Feed

So, Facebook’s been cooking up some wild stuff this year. Forget just stalking your ex or laughing at dog videos, ’cause your feet’s about to get a major glow-up. First off, we’re talking 3D posts that pop out of your screen like magic – imagine your friend’s vacation pics coming at you like you’re right there. Then, there’s this AI thing that’s eerily good at guessing what you wanna see next. Like, it knows you’re into skateboarding or obsessed with baking before even you do. And if you’re all about keeping your scrolling private, the new privacy tools are like a digital ninja – super stealthy and totally in control. Facebook’s basically giving your feed a personal makeover, making sure every scroll is full of stuff you actually care about.

Why Tech Updates Matter

Every year, new trends revolutionize industries, driving both businesses and consumers to adapt. From smart homes to groundbreaking gadgets, these developments pack a punch. Recent reports suggest that the global consumer electronics market alone will exceed $1 trillion by 2024, reflecting the mounting interest and demand for cutting-edge devices.

OpenAI new models

With a valuation of $157 billion but less than $2 billion in revenue, OpenAI is under pressure to generate returns on its massive investments. This year, OpenAI launched GPT-4o and the more advanced o1 model.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning:

Advancements in Generative AI: Generative AI continues to evolve, with improvements in models like GPT-4 and beyond, enhancing capabilities in natural language processing, content creation, and automation.

AI Regulation and Ethics: There is growing attention on the ethical implications of AI, with discussions and proposals for regulations to ensure responsible AI development and usage.

Quantum Computing:

Progress in Quantum Research: Significant strides are being made in quantum computing research, with advancements in quantum hardware and algorithms. Companies and research institutions are working towards practical applications and overcoming technical challenges.

5G and Beyond:

5G Expansion: 5G networks are expanding globally, offering faster speeds and lower latency. Developments are also underway for 6G technology, aiming to provide even more advanced connectivity and capabilities.

Cybersecurity:

Increased Focus on Cybersecurity: As cyber threats become more sophisticated, there is a heightened focus on improving cybersecurity measures, including advancements in threat detection, response systems, and data protection.

Inundated with AI

Enterprise spending can be hard to track, as AI spreads throughout IT ecosystems, according to Erik Peterson, founder and CTO at IT cost management platform provider CloudZero.

“AI spend is coming in from so many different directions,” Peterson told CIO Dive. “It’s coming in in the form of your own software engineering or in-house teams who are using AI to accelerate their work, and it’s replacing functionality in existing systems.”
